Taking the Scenic Route Home
Friday I got off work early. I gassed up the KLR and headed up into the west hills. It was a beautiful afternoon. The leaves were changing color, there was no wind and the sun was shining through the tall firs.
This canyon used to seem very remote-now it is laced with mountain bike trails and stunt props.
I dropped down an abandoned logging road into a valley I have collected mushrooms from in years past. I found these sulfur caps on a stump in the trail.I wasn't having much luck finding Chantarelles though...
Until suddenly I sppotted
one, the delicate yellow edge poking up from beneath a blanket of moss. I soon
found a handfull of big, meaty Cantharellus
.
Satisfied with my haul, I hopped back on the bike.
The ride out of the draw was challenging- a steep hill with a series of waterbars and berms cut across the old road bed.
The KLR was up to the challenge and I made the ascent without problems, riding home in the warm, late afternoon sunlight.
