The world fills him with wonder. When he looks at the sky he is lifted into flights of fancy, when he stares at the earth he is drawn beneath its surface. He is delighted to find the macrocosm and the microcosm equally mesmerizing.

There was ice on the surface of the cat’s water dish this morning.

No cars moving yet. There is a light on at the farmhouse across the street.

It was quiet out here until Walter heard something I didn’t. Now it’s not.

Walter has settled down. Amy’s gotten up. The lights are on. Owls are calling back and forth, one down by the creek, the other over at the neighbor’s barn.
