Cardamom Tea

The Writer, Vernon Wade

Vernon Wade is a poet, author and freelancer. He has been published in The Gorge Literary Journal, Dualsport Rider Magazine, Hack’d Magazine, The Sidecarist, ROB Magazine and The Hood River News.

The world fills him with wonder.  When he looks at the sky he is lifted into flights of fancy, when he stares at the earth he is drawn beneath its surface. He is delighted to find the macrocosm and the microcosm equally mesmerizing.

Lying in the hot tub

drinking cardamom tea and staring at the stars,

in my head I have fixed my motorcycle.

I’ve graded the front yard

and reseeded it with red clover.

I’ve rebuilt the raised beds and added a third.

Between the gardens,

I have carefully spread black plastic.

I’ve cut down the pine that Amy doesn’t like

and rented a wood chipper.

I’ve spread the chips, covering the plastic,

and inoculated them with mushroom spore.

By the time I have finished my tea,

it is time to dress and get ready for work.

I am exhausted,

yet all my chores and projects

remain undone.
