Good Morning

The Writer, Vernon Wade

Vernon Wade is a poet, author and freelancer. He has been published in The Gorge Literary Journal, Dualsport Rider Magazine, Hack’d Magazine, The Sidecarist, ROB Magazine and The Hood River News.

The world fills him with wonder.  When he looks at the sky he is lifted into flights of fancy, when he stares at the earth he is drawn beneath its surface. He is delighted to find the macrocosm and the microcosm equally mesmerizing.

12/17/25 6:15 43F (6.1C) Clouds and ferocious wind gusts. It is dark.

No hot tub  this morning.  We woke up at 2:00 and found the power out. It is still out now.

There were rain squalls all night.  Terrific blasts of wind pelted  the house with debris.

You could hear it coming, moaning and howling. Then the impact of small branches,  leaves and detritus pounding against the windows and the siding, bouncing off the metal roof vents, banging down on the deck.

A silence would follow, sometimes long, sometimes only a brief  respite, during which Amy and I would try to snatch some sleep.

It was if the storm needed to pause and catch its breath, but always it would resume.

It’s still storming now. The school is on a two hour delay, so Amy is trying to get a little more sleep. I am  up, sitting in the library in the dark.

Good morning.
