The world fills him with wonder. When he looks at the sky he is lifted into flights of fancy, when he stares at the earth he is drawn beneath its surface. He is delighted to find the macrocosm and the microcosm equally mesmerizing.

Birds chatter in the otherwise quiet morning.
Twenty minutes pass. The neighbor’s dog begins to yap, raising Walter’s vocal ire.
The rooster crows. Birds are singing.
The sun crests the ridge, spilling dappled beams of light into the canyon.
A car passes on its way to town.
Good morning.
