10/31/26 Happy Halloween.
7:30 It is cold.
There is not yet enough light to be certain, but the sky appears to be clear.
I have been forced from the warmth of my bed by the need to urinate.
The fire, which had burned since Wednesday, is dead with nary an ember remaining.
With Amy’s assistance I kindled a new flame and the kettle is now on to boil.
I was up several times last night.
The moon, five days past full, shone through the trees, casting a playful light in an otherwise dark forest.
It did not rain, which was a pleasant change.
The fire was still burning when I made my dash for the thunderbox at 4:00, and I built it up to a fine blaze before returning to my blankets.
When I opened my eyes at 6:00 the lodge was black. The lantern had gone out and the fire was cold. I closed my eyes again.
Now I sit by a new fire, with a cup of hot tea in hand.
Good morning.
