Peas Porridge in the Pot

Ingredients

  • 3 cups dried peas
  • any sort of pork from a ham bone to chopped bacon
  • 2 cups broth, substitute bouillon if needed for trail life
  • 2 potatoes
  • 1 onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • enough water to cover peas and some more to add later
  • 2 tbs marjoram
  • salt and pepper to taste
  1. Place peas in a pot, cover with water and bring to a boil
  2. Chop potatoes into 1/2″ cubes and add to pot, reduce heat to a simmer
  3. Add broth
  4. Add pork, browning first if uncooked. I cut in some summer sausage this time.
  5. Chop onion and garlic and add to pot.
  6. Continue simmering 3 hours or until peas soften and fall apart. Stir up from the bottom and add liquid as needed to prevent scorching.
  7. When peas become a thick paste stir in marjoram, salt and pepper. Soup is ready!
