A December Foray

The Adventurer, Vernon Wade

Vernon was born in the Pacific Northwest and still lives in the shadow of Mt. Hood, near the small town where he grew up. Vernon has spent decades wandering the hills, hunting mushrooms, camping and riding motorcycles into the remotest nooks and crannies to be found in the region.

Another nice day, mild for December. Mike, Walter and I headed into the woods to see what we could see.

This section of the road was flooded.

The flood stretched out into the woods on either side. Logs and debris were floating amongst the tree trunks.

We hit a big pothole and the dog cart bounced up and punched out the back window. We slapped some duct tape over it, cleaned up the broken glass and carried on.

The plan was to go to Pistol Creek and look for the glasses Mike lost last time we were there. Unfortunately the Forest Service had closed the road.

We turned around and headed down the hill. We could see Disappearing Lake through the trees. It was quite full. There has been no freezing weather, so I think the ice plug theory is bunk.

We stopped along the way to do a little foraging.

We found a large patch of fleshy, toothed fungi

I wanted them to be hedge hogs, but they didn’t quite fit the key. I’m not sure what they are.

The catch of the day! Mike spotted this beauty from the truck.

Most of what we were finding had been damaged by rain. The light was failing so we kindled a fire and put some water on to boil.

Mike tried to identify our collection while we waited for the kettle to heat up.

soon we had hot chocolate and rum.

I hung a pot of chanterelle-pumpkin soup over the flames to warm while we enjoyed our drinks.

Mike reheating his drink with a flip iron.

It was dark by the time we ate, but the soup was delicious and it was a fine day spent in the woods.

Home made turkey/vegetable soup to which I added chopped chanterelles and chunks of dried, smoked pumpkin.
