Good Afternoon

The Adventurer, Vernon Wade

Vernon was born in the Pacific Northwest and still lives in the shadow of Mt. Hood, near the small town where he grew up. Vernon has spent decades wandering the hills, hunting mushrooms, camping and riding motorcycles into the remotest nooks and crannies to be found in the region.

It was a beautiful sunny Saturday, quite warm for December, so Amy, Walter and I set aside our chores and went for a walk. We ended up down at Wy’East Winery. Amy had a glass of red and I had a glass of pink. Walter had to wait.

We finished our wine and walked home through the vineyards and up Neal Creek. It was a pleasant vinamble. The sky was blue with a zypher from the south tickling our faces. Crows flew up from the vines and perched in the top of our neighbor’s walnut tree, sharing the limbs with some redwinged blackbirds and a thrush.

Mike showed up as we neared home. Mike and I soaked in the hot tub drinking hot toddies. We discussed our paths through the minor and major irritations and inconveniences that make up the world we live in, as old men are wont to do. Amy was inside on the phone. She talked to her mom and then got a call from an old friend, so Mike and I must have been out there for a couple of hours.

We got hungry so we went inside and got dressed. It took no effort to convince Amy to drive us to Sawtooth for dinner. I didn’t take any photos but the barmaid was cute, the beer was cold, the pizza delicious and the desert an exercise in gluttony.

We didn’t get anything done Saturday, but I went to bed well satisfied.
