Good Afternoon

The Adventurer, Vernon Wade

Vernon was born in the Pacific Northwest and still lives in the shadow of Mt. Hood, near the small town where he grew up. Vernon has spent decades wandering the hills, hunting mushrooms, camping and riding motorcycles into the remotest nooks and crannies to be found in the region.

Amy and I ran up to Trout Creek Ridge and bought a stack of books at a garage sale, including Jack London, Earl Stanley Gardner, and Robert Service, for a dollar a book. I even found some old bus stop porn.

We dropped back to the highway and hit another sale on Quinn, where we scored a food sealer, snowshoes, and an external frame backpack. The folks running the sale were really nice and regaled me with hunting stories.

Afterwards, Amy and I went to Baseline for a “light” brunch. It was a grueling morning.

Amy had a chicken biscuit sandwich; I had biscuits and gravy with an egg over easy.

I’d rate the biscuits and chorizo gravy 4 biscuits out of a possible 5, maybe  4 1/2. The gravy was good, not pasty with just enough color and bite from the chorizo to make a statement but not enough to overwhelm. The biscuits are fresh and flaky, just how they should be.

I’m taking the rest of the day off, dozing in the hammock, drinking gin and tonic, and reading a murder mystery.
