A Bear Et My Kayak – Part 2

The Adventurer, Vernon Wade

Vernon was born in the Pacific Northwest and still lives in the shadow of Mt. Hood, near the small town where he grew up. Vernon has spent decades wandering the hills, hunting mushrooms, camping and riding motorcycles into the remotest nooks and crannies to be found in the region.

 An Empty Camp

Monday evening found me in an empty camp.

Next weekend the California Crew would show up, but for now, I was alone. The silence enveloped me.

Tuesday morning dawned bright and clear.

Although I had things to do to get ready for the weekend, I spent most of the day on the beach.

The warm weather brought out butterflies.

The warmth also brought out swarms of flying ants. They didn’t bite but they got into everything.

There was a pot of beans over the fire the whole time so I always had a hot meal ready.

One of the first things I did when I had the camp to myself was to set up the shower and rinse the grime off. The Zodi propane powered camp shower provided three gallons of glorious, pressurized, hot water.

After I showered, I dragged some poles to the beach and set them up.

This 12′ lodge made a nice cabana for hanging out down by the stream.

Walter hauled the water casks into camp.

I kept busy making the camp ready with projects such as putting up a trail marker for the California Crew.

There were meals to prepare.

And I caught up on my reading.

Thursday I went to town for more ice and provisions. The next group of campers was due in Friday morning. On the way out I found something had torn apart a beachball which had been cached in the canoe about an eighth of a mile from the truck. I didn’t realize it was a portent of things to come…

I like the photo story format. It’ll be interesting to read what the torn-up beach ball portends. I’m glad you now have a popup that allowed me to subscribe to future posts.
